Nollywood has celebrated box office records, streaming milestones, and international festival selections, but on September 26, 2026, it achieved something entirely different.
At Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, thousands of Nigerians gathered for the premiere of Black Market, a crime thriller directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay.

By the end of the night, the film had secured a new Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single venue, drawing 51,000 verified attendees and placing Nigerian cinema in the global record books.
Yet beyond the numbers, the event told a bigger story about Nollywood’s ambition, the power of local storytelling, and an industry increasingly confident of its place on the world stage.
The celebrity arrivals and social media buzz reflected a broader narrative of ambition, collaboration, and the growing confidence of the Nigerian film industry.
Black Market proved to be more than a movie premiere; it was a statement about what Nollywood believes it can achieve.
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, the film tells the story of five women running a cross-border fuel-smuggling operation whose lives are thrown into chaos after the daughter of one of them is kidnapped.
Set against the backdrop of survival, loyalty, and economic hardship, the story draws on realities familiar to many Nigerians while delivering the pace and tension of a commercial thriller.
The film’s ensemble cast includes Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Uzor Arukwe, and Itele D Icon.
The premiere itself demonstrated how far the industry has come in rethinking the cinema experience. Rather than limit the premiere to invited guests and industry insiders, the producers turned it into a mass cultural event.
Attendees were treated not only to the screening but also to music, food, games, and entertainment activities, transforming the occasion into a festival of Nigerian creativity.
The guest list also reflected the significance of the moment. Among those present were Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, and Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Nollywood personalities including Kunle Afolayan, Kunle Remi, Stan Nze, Gabriel Afolayan, alongside members of the cast and production team, were also in attendance.
Perhaps the most striking image of the evening was not on the red carpet, but the sight of tens of thousands of Nigerians gathered in one place to watch a homegrown film. For years, conversations about Nollywood’s growth have centred on box office numbers, streaming deals, and international recognition.
Black Market added another dimension by demonstrating audience engagement on a scale rarely seen anywhere in the world.
More than the record itself, Black Market captured a defining moment in Nollywood’s evolution.
For decades, the industry has built its reputation on resilience, creativity, and an unmatched ability to tell stories that resonate with local audiences.
The Guinness World Record screening showed that Nigerian filmmakers are now thinking on a much larger scale creating not only films that compete globally, but events capable of drawing global attention.
In many ways, Black Market was a celebration of possibility.
A homegrown story gathered more than 51,000 people in a single venue and rewrote a world record in the process.
Whether measured by attendance, ambition, or cultural impact, the event showed what happens when Nigerian storytelling meets bold execution.
Years from now, headlines may remember the Guinness World Record, but the bigger legacy could be the confidence it instils in the industry.
